CORSA B STEERING RACK????

Post by ashley14297 »

Hello all, went off to a garage today to get tracking/balancing done as car was pulling to the left (as its done since i bought it but never got round to doing it). However, a problem was found :( Basically, he couldnt do the tracking as there was not enough thread on one side, and asked whether it had been in an accident. The previous owner has smashed it and done a bodge up job of it. The man at the garage said the only way to get around it is to get a new steering rack fitted  anyone have any ideas how much to get this done at a garage, as i know bugger all about cars. Or is there a cheap way around this? I have 2000 (X) Corsa B 1.4 16V Sport with PAS.

whats probably happened is they'v put a new ball joint on the one side, then had the tracking done, then the steering wheel was out of the correct position, so they pulled it off, and then pushed it back on but with the steering rack not in the central position.

so wind all the way left and wind all the way right, and count how many rotations of the wheel, then rotate the wheel until its halfway, say if its 3 rotations of the wheel from lock to lock, rotate the wheel 1.5 turns and this is the true centre of your steering rack,' and then look at the steering wheel and see if its upright ( in its normal position) and if it isnt then thats your problem, and also jump out and look at where abouts the wheels are pointing.

this should be your problem, and not a bent rack.

That makes sense, my steering has always been wonky, it is a bit to the left when im going straight on a road. The steering turns more to the right than it does to the left, you can even tell by getting out and looking at the tyres. A mate of mine is putting it in the garage on tuesday to have a look at it. He reckons everything just needs adjusting. What do you think? Im due to drive to cornwall on thursday from southampton (200 miles) will it be safe enough? My mate said it would be ok.
