Revs High, revs drop

Post by mark f »

Hi
New to the forum.
Son has a 1997 1.2 sohc. Engine revs high when it wants to then drops and sometimes cuts out, a bit of a *** to start.
after it has warmed it can be sluggish coming out of a junction engine almost dying.
I have cleaned EGR valve. Going to have a go and clean Idle Control this weekend.

All the symptoms remind me of my old MK V 2.0L cortina many years ago, auto choke problems.
I know this subject has no doubt been covered many times but any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Choke/ICV, same are. I think you are looking in the correct direction. Wouldn't rule out the EGR without replacing it though.

Thank you for that. I have cleaned the EGR, but I do wonder if it is still sticking. Have seen them on ebay for £60, might have to get one.

Thanks again

You can run the car without the EGR by using a blanking plate. Apparently they run just as well if not better without.

Changed the Idle Control valve and that has sorted the high revs problem (old valve was stuck cutting air in carb in effect choke was allways full on). the problem of the engine cutting out after a small drive still exists. Engine stutters to a stop and then is hard to start. Throttle down and keep turning the key until it fires up and gets going. Any ideas anyone? Crank sensor? Airflow?

Thanks

Help,

Replaced MAP, thought I'd fixed it, but no it still dies. It seems to go for awhile and then when you stop (junction etc), and then pull off engine looses power and then is a pig to start. Did the paper clip test as mentioned on this forum and fault 47 comes up. EGR is at fault. Would this cause this problem, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Oh well, changing EGR didn't work. Drove a couple of miles just after I changed it and all OK. Next day son used it to go to school and was a pig. Starts all right when cold but when you have to slow down and go , lights, junction etc it cuts out, gets going in the end, almost like it takes a while for everything to fire up. Looks like like I'll have to take it to the garage.

Thanks eveyone who has offered help/suggestions
